The problem isn’t the stop loss itself it’s the fact that everyone places it in the exact same obvious spot that makes it super easy for stop hunters to predict and target those levels

Use of a Stop Loss is important. I've been burned several times for not using a stop loss. It is true that Stop Hunting is done by the institutions. So from my experience, I put a stop loss not on a previous High when Selling and not on a previous Low when Buying but on a High or Low that breaks Market Structure.
When Market Structure is broken 9 times out of 10 a reversal of the trend happens. This tells you that I was wrong in deciding where the trend is going. It is a painful price to pay but you are still in the game by preserving a good portion of your Capital. If you reverse your position quickly, you can still recoup a big portion of your loss if not breakeven.

Always, but I don’t use a fixed number of pips.
I place the stop where my trade idea is no longer valid, then adjust the lot size so the risk stays around 1–2%. If that requires a stop that is too wide, I usually skip the trade.

I use a mental stop loss about 60% of the time. I know before I enter where I'll exit. My real stop loss is the sizing of my trade. If the trade goes against me BIG in pips, the size of the position will never be large enough to damage my account, less than 5% often time 3%. I trade the 4HR time frame so while i use tight stops at times, often times with the larger swings in the 4HR I have to allow the trade to run without a stop.

stop hunters? hmmm, just use Bookmap and you'll see all the levels. heatmaps show where the liquidity clusters, so you can place stops away from the obvious zones. once you see the order flow, it's not magic, it's just data.
