Hi everyone,
This is a great topic—I’m actually surprised I hadn’t checked it out before today!
About stop loss: most traders agree it’s a must, and I totally agree with that too. But I’ve always wondered—how much does the broker actually affect this part of trading?

I think it does, honestly. Your broker directly affects how reliably your SL gets executed, slippage, spread manipulation, and execution speed can make or break a trade. Your stop is only as good as the broker behind it.

That said, it also depends. If you’re trading size, during news, or in high volatility, then yeah the broker really matters. And while I agree SL are a must, in some situations they can work against you, if they’re too tight or poorly placed. It’s about knowing when and where to use them, we've all had a trade(s) that hit SL and reverse to our intended TP lol

I agree with you. Honestly, brokers can really change a lot of things in trading. At this point, I sometimes ask myself—maybe hedging trades is the right move?
To be honest, hedging at the right moments has saved me more than once. But yeah, even that can be frustrating when the market goes into a range. Suddenly you find yourself stuck in a position with no clear way out... It’s not a great feeling.

Totally feel you on that. I thought I was the only one hahaha, Hedging can be a useful tool, especially during uncertain or volatile periods, it buys you time to reassess without taking a hard loss, although your psychology plays a big role tbh because you can't fall into that I'm invisible to the market mentality lol

I use SL in 1 of my trading system which is using large lot, and do not use it in another trading system (my gold investor trading system, because i am using small lots). I do sometimes use hedging, then cut the losses after collecting more amount than the losses.

Wow, so I’m not alone! ))) You’re totally right. Hedging trades—if done in the right spot and with enough coverage—can really be a lifesaver and a way to stay in control. Sometimes I hedge a single trade just to manage the risk better.
Then, without considering that hedged trade, I open new positions and take profits. At the end of the day, I close the hedged trade at a loss and subtract it from the profits I made throughout the day. This approach has always worked for me—although it took a tough journey to handle the psychological pressure that comes with it.

Honestly, I can’t even imagine trading without a stop loss anymore. I’ve lost too many accounts in the past and I’m not proud of it—but it’s become part of my experience. So now, I either use a stop loss or, at the very least, freeze the trade at a specific point to control the risk.

This is the way, it's all about finding what works for you

In my trading, I always use server-side hard stops and test a broker’s slippage/spread on micro live before scaling; if average slippage eats > 1/2 my edge, I switch

This is so true—seriously!
If you have enough capital and can hold your position through different market conditions, you’ll probably end up in profit. Take gold, for example. It’s a precious metal that tends to go up over time.
But the real question is: Does our account balance have enough strength to handle the drawdown? Do we have enough margin to stay in a losing trade and average it into profit?
That’s exactly where a solid exit plan becomes important. Sometimes it’s a stop loss, and sometimes it’s hedging the open trades to manage the risk.

Read the book Best Loser Wins. For a long time I've had 82% win rate but I didn't have any progress of profit making because I lost my winnings in a couple of trades. You need stop losses to avoid this mistake.

Some sort of stop is a MUST..
After trading through 9-11, Wars, Covid and now Trump the Tariff Tweeter, I know first hand ANYTHING can happen at any moment,
Just dont put them at obvious levels....
Im only here for the Guzzoline...

Fx4money, you said you don't use a stop loss for your gold investor system. Given the risk of a massive, black swan event, how do you manage the risk of a significant drawdown without a stop loss? Is it a matter of having enough capital to simply ride out any storm, no matter how severe?

No stoploss here. I collect swap with hundreds of microlots in grid trading with short, medium and long TP's combined and always make sure the margin is high enough to cope with 10% rate change and enough funds to deposit way more in case a rate changes 25%. I keep positions open for a very long time. 8ct swap on usdchf long is 28.60 euro per year. Simply wait for 200 euro swap on that microlot.

When I started trading I paid for a course and signal service by john fortune on YouTube , he never used stop losses because he traded markets he believed were to far extended. Boy did that go wrong for me after multiple massive losses and him "claiming" he had eventually cut the trade for Breakeven etc I started using them religiously. Now I have a very wide automated stop loss on Ctrader when any trade is placed and I adjust it after the trade entry has started forming.

I always use a hard stop, even if I plan to manage manually—position sizing + a defined invalidation keeps the expectancy positive when spreads widen or I’m away from the screen. The only traders I’ve seen survive without hard stops use tiny leverage and hedge structures, which is a different game entirely
