US Consumer Price Index - September 2025

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in September, after rising 0.4 percent in August, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.0 percent before seasonal adjustment. Note that September CPI data collection was completed before the lapse in appropriations. The index for gasoline rose 4.1 percent in September and was the largest factor in the all items monthly increase, as the index for energy rose 1.5 percent over the month. Energy rebound was the main story, offsetting slightly softer core inflation. Core services remain elevated, particularly shelter, medical, and recreation, keeping underlying inflation sticky. With headline and core both at 3.0% y/y, inflation progress has stalled near twice the Fed’s target. The Fed is still expected to cut rates next week.

Notes:

Gasoline +4.1% – The biggest contributor to the overall CPI gain, lifting energy prices +1.5%.

Shelter +0.2% (OER +0.2%) – Continues to add steady upward pressure to core inflation.

Airfares +2.7% – Reversed part of August’s sharp 5.9% rise, remaining volatile but still elevated.

Utility (piped) gas service –1.2% – The sharpest monthly drop within energy services.

Motor vehicle insurance –0.4% – Offered rare relief after a long streak of increases.

Used cars & trucks –0.4% – Ongoing normalization in the vehicle market.

Everybody pays to to play. this LAST LEG IS ALMOST IDENTICAL to the 'bump and dump' six hors ago. Order block is forming just below the high earlier in the London session. They knew all along what was coming out this morning. You can count on that. Sold out at both tops and back in around 1.620 after green fees.
