So since joining and observing here, Ive noticed so many, if not most, still use MT4. As someone who has used Metatrader since its inception in 2005, I have used both mt4 and mt5 extensively, but I personally find MT5 a far more powerful platform. Just curious as to why so many still opt for mt4?

In practice (real MQL4 performance)
MQL4 is interpreted (not compiled to native code like C++).
That means:

1. Each of these comparisons takes an insignificant amount of time.
2. Even if you ran these checks millions of times per second, the difference would be microseconds — completely negligible compared to chart rendering, order handling, or price data processing.

We’re talking about nanosecond-scale differences in something that runs maybe a few thousand times in an indicator tick.
What actually matters
Performance-wise, in an MQL4 script or indicator:

1. Array access, indicator calculations, and graphical updates dominate CPU time.
2. Enum comparisons like this are essentially free.

Therefore:

1. The explicit version (== Long || == Both) is preferable for code clarity and future safety.
2. The shorter version (!= Short) gives no measurable speed benefit.

1. What changes between MQL4 and MQL5
MQL5 is compiled to optimized bytecode, and then JIT-compiled (Just-In-Time) by MetaTrader 5’s virtual machine at runtime.
That means the code is much closer to native performance than in MQL4.
However:

1. Enum comparisons are still integer comparisons.
2. The compiler is smart enough to optimize away redundant logic like:
   if(PositionType == Long || PositionType == Both)
   It will emit exactly the same optimized machine-level code as:
   if(PositionType != Short)
   because it can deduce that Both is the only remaining value.

So, even though MQL5’s compiler is more advanced, the end performance difference is still zero in real terms.

Conclusion:
Even in MQL5, there’s no performance advantage to the shorter form. The explicit version is still the better practice — it’s clearer, safer, and equally fast.
