Besides to what everyone said about martingale:

If you need to use martingale for your trading strategy, then you are simply doing something wrong already since you expose yourself more to risk to have an edge which should not be done.

Martingale system will work depending on how well you know your stuff. For example, if you just lost your trade, but you know this is really a good entry point and you are 99% sure its a winner, you can martingale to recover your losses and that will grow your account faster.

But most of the time it is not recommended as people usually aren't disciplined enough or make random trades based on emotions due to the loss.

Discipline is the key; no doubt Martingale is a popular trading strategy for the Forex traders; but I didn’t get any suitable result by this trading system.

I think it might not be as popular and that efficient in normal forex but it is very popular in binary options. That being said, I don't encourage or discourage the use of martingale. I think it's up to individuals to make it be profitable for them.

Its easier for me to explain using binary options.

Imagine every time we win, we win 80% of our traded amount. Meaning trading $1 will return us $0.8. But if we lose, we lose 100% of our traded amount, in this case is $1.

Martingale is where every time we lose, we increase our trade so we can get back everything we have lost so far when we have a winner.

For example, using a 2.5x multiplier on lost, and 80% on win, a sample scenario could be,
Trade $1 -> Lost
Trade $2.5 -> Lost
Trade $6.25 -> Lost
Trade $15.63 -> Lost
Trade $39.06 - > Win, gets $31.25 ($39.06 * 80%)
Total lost: 1+2.5+6.25+15.63 = $25.38
Total won: $31.25
We would still made a earning of $5.87 and got back all our losses.

So as you can see, no matter how much we have lost, as long as we continue to martingale, we will get back all we have lost eventually on a winner.

BUT the issue is martingale blows our account fast. We started with $1 and look at what we are trading now, $39.06. If $1 is 1% of your account, we are now risking 39.06% of our account on this trade. Not that great for risk management isn't it.

To put it back into forex terms, we can imagine the winning percentage everytime on a winner is the number of pips we need.

Dear GeorgeBaile,

I think you are spot on, it is the discipline. However I have to disagree with "martingale" begin a strategy on its own. In my view it falls under the "Money Management" category and should be partnered with a consistent complimentary trading strategy. On its own it is nothing more than a <50% probability of success (due to spreads and fees if the same profit value is used eg.+/-10).

Here are some examples: 200 trades taken with $10 profit or loss using martingale only. The Blue line is the expected return per trade (~$5) and the Red line is the profit (right scale).

Ok, so far only 2 draw downs of 1,250 and 2,000. No problem. What about the next 200-400 trades?

Profit reached 1,500 after 350 trades and then 12 losses in a row were encountered. with a -40,000 draw down. Next trade would be to risk 40,960 to keep the 1,500 and make 10..

How interesting is that?
