    The Consumer Sentiment Index in the United States plunged 10% in May compared to the month prior, to stand at 44.8, a final report posted by the University of Michigan showed on Friday. The figure tumbled 14.2% on an annual basis. The Current Economic Conditions Index slid 12.8% in the reported period compared to April and plummeted 22.2% compared to May 2025, amounting to 45.8 points. The Index of Consumer Expectations dropped 8.3% month-over-month and 7.9% year-over-year, coming in at 44.1. "Year-ahead inflation expectations inched up from 4.7% last month to 4.8% this month. Worst confidence print in 20+ years.....and, go figure, markets don't care. Unfortunately, but understandably, these UoM surveys have lost impact.

Remember when, during the tariff drawdowns from 2025 there was a 9.5%+ inflation expectation? Yeah, like that happened.

Then there is the political bias (66% democratic respondents)...which skews things.

Couple that with Republican sentiment sliding and Trump has even more pressure to end the war......which would lead to lower oil and better equity prices. So, in this regard, the forward looking markets no doubt appreciate these over-extended numbers as they help pressure a result (hence /vx falling or flat rather than rising).

Add in the fact that the "end of the war will see the numbers bounce a lot higher" expectation and boom.

The consumer survey can say things are bad, and that's justification for a 0.5% drop in /es, but the reality is that today is better than last year for the equity markets, so if using them for a price guide, I rate 'em about as worthless as, well, a tweet saying "we are going to get a deal with Iran....one way or another".

If inflation is still high, it results in an expectation for the Fed to keep interest rates higher for longer, which results in higher bond yields for longer, meaning that investors will invest money to the US government for guaranteed profits and this is what's boosting the dollar currently, but not over the long run

Inflation devalues the currency UNTIL the central bank raises rates (which they might not do). Real rates are falling. So it begs the question why the USD is rising.
