US: Whiffs of Worse to Come in the February CPI Report
The CPI report was in-line with forecasts for February, rising at an elevated 0.3% on the headline and a more moderate 0.2% on the core measure which excludes food and energy. The year-on-year inflation rate held at 2.4% with the core measure at 2.5%, unchanged from January’s pace. One could easily conclude from the headline numbers that there is nothing to see here. But a quick review of the component details leaves my stomach a little queasy. Services prices, which comprise around 64% of the overall index, increased a robust 0.3% last month.
