GoMarkets has a server in our San Diego datacenter. I believe it is DC#5 in your MT4 terminal.

The latency, on average, should be <1 ms with CNS. That's REALLY good, especially for scalpers.

Could you tell me how you are finding that ping speed? For example, if I ping our Melbourne DC, I get a ping speed at this minute of around 45ms, but you may not have the correct server address. Whilst having a VPS near a data centre is good, ideally you want it near to the main trading server, which for us is in Sydney. Remember, if you are connecting to a VPS, you may have latency to that server from you, so it may make it difficult to use.

However, if you are already getting excellent speed and execution, does it matter what the ping speed shows you? Are you looking to get a VPS just to reduce this ping speed, or for any other reason?

So how about that GoMarktet 1pip EUR/USD spread in real life?

Its better than MBT (MB Trading) tight spreads?

What about 0,1pip spread from deltastock.com

TTCM (Traders Trust) variable is bad imho

IB (Interactive Brokers) is not the best for EUR/USD anymore?

The ping speed comes from MT4. I was a bit surprised myself.

We use Telstra Business ADSL 2+ and our office is on St Kilda Rd. The internet here is usually super fast.

I'll get an account with CNS, who seem very good, but am tossing up between the different centres.

I am looking for a VPS only to improve signal execution speed. GM seems quite fast to me.

A couple of things I have noticed is that th GM feed is quite "noisy" with lots of ticks compared to Market Maker brokers who I assume smooth their quotes.

I also seem to lose a lot if GM tick data coming down the pipe.

Is their an MT4 Broker/Server .srv file for GM in Australia?

MT4 quotes a ping time of 250ms, but a CMD.exe gives an average of 75ms which is more reasonable.

Looks like only 3 hops between my server and the GM boxes, which I assume are hosted on Collins St, about 5km away.

Hi Peter,

Melbourne is one of the data centres assigned to the server, but it is not the main server. The Melbourne data centre is actually located in Port Melbourne in a colocation centre. The main server is located in Sydney.

I have learnt to almost ignore the ping time that MetaTrader shows you and use a proper pig test where possible. 75ms seems more accurate likely for that distance and is more similar to what I am seeing from our end.

You are probably correct in that we will have more tick data than many other brokers, and that is down to the nature of our feed. Because there are so many contibutors it can move around a little more, but it also contributes to the spreads being lower. The amount of ticks coming through would have little impact on the ping speed though, as our servers have plentiful amounts of spare bandwidth.

I notice I can host my own 1U server there for $200 a month and am starting to think this would be a good option.

Hi Peter,

We don't use Intervolve for our main trading server.Without going into too much detail, they are more than adequate to operate the data centres, like our Melbourne one, but when it comes to the mian trading server we wanted to have something which was a couple of steps above Intervolve. Our server is hosted with Harbour in the same building in Ultimo, but there are differences. Harbour have an on-site NOC which means that should there be any problems with anything they have a whole team on site for rapid response among other benefits. Obviously we have to pay a lot more, but it is not something that we want to compromise on for obvious reasons.

Hosting your own server with Intervolve at Ultimo would probably give you an almost non-existent ping rate although they may use different providers for their internet, but it may be an excessive cost. However, I don't know exactly what you are looking to do, so I guess it is only you who can decide what is needed and worthwhile to get the most from your trading.

I think that Barry answered this already. the SDCA servers in the USA is where the GoMarkets server is. So your ping time is 1 ms at worst. I've never seen report of completed execution take longer than just over 1 second, unless the market is moving fast. Then it may take 2-3 seconds to show on the chart. They already have many clients who trade with GoM, including myself. You have little to worry about.

VPS, especially close to a trade server is great for signals/auto trade. I wouldn't start to worry about co-locating next to the main trading server until you are trading some serious high frequency volume. Maybe 10 million round turn a day or so.

ATC brokers was one of the few brokers I saw that took the trading server thing so seriously with their clients. They limited the demos to 2 per client, unless you were a live client. Their demo accounts were actually with their live server and live feed; they didn't believe in a separate demo server. And they were more than happy to host your EA next to their server, if you wanted to.

i think chris answered this one. But having a connection to a true interbank feed will bring a lot of ticks. I think there are 2 major options for feed from currenex. Either 200ms snapshots, or another option where you receive each indidivdual order, but it requires special API provisions and certain internet/connectivity requirements and is more expensive. For a retail trader, or even most smaller wholesalers, 200ms snapshots (5 times per second) are more than plenty. I think interactive brokers uses this 200ms snapshot for their backfill data. Unfortunately, mt4 historical quotes are limited to 1min bars. I hope mt5 removes that limitation, or at least gives brokers the option of storing tick data or xxxms snapshots data.

Is it possible to have a demo account with GoMarkets that doesn't expire,(assuming it's used)?

Would be used for testing ideas and EA's.

A hilarious story: a friend of mine in Melbourne told me that he decided to open up an account with Gomarkets few months ago, but before he did anything, he actually went to check out their office in the CBD and lingered around a bit just to see if there was anything there. Well he's genuinely satisfied and opened up an account few days later......I wonder how many traders in the world do actually check out their broker's physical location

I am not a big fan of MT4 based brokers generally, but for Gomarkets I give them big credit. For one thing if you are concern about fund safety, Gomarkets is having segregated account with NAB, a very solid choice. Good execution and service is what I heard.

They used to have this GoTrader platform which I find it much more user friendly, what happened to it?

Ah, so that was who was lurking around outside!! Only joking, but yes we are most certainly here. I would hope that all brokers put genuine information on their sites and will be happy to see you if you turn up at the office.

GoTrader was a Saxo Bank platform. We previously had a white label with Saxo when we used to offer CFDs, but that was well over a year ago now. Since then we are now concentrating mainly on Forex so just run MetaTrader4, we will be looking to add other products to MT4 in due course and as previously mentioned will soon run MT5 in addition to MT4. MT5 will not replace MT4 at all, It will simply just provide an alternative if clients wish to use it.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

The question of the margin calls is going to be raised at the enxt board meeting I believe, so I should be able to give you an update after that. As for the leverage restrictions, we would never just change the margin requirement without telling or discussing it with a client first. I am not aware of any plans to have PAMM accounts, but it is something I can ask. What exactly are you looking to do on the PAMM side of things?

Essentially, you can copy trades to multiple accounts. You can customize how much lot size you can trade with each account. Profits, losses, and commissions to the account manager, etc are done in real time (or at least once each settlement day) and the results are readily available. PAMM is done with software from the broker side, and the performance of the master account is transparent. The monies all stay in each trader or "investors" separate accounts.

Another way of simplifying it, is to say that you have an account and I have an account at GoM, and I want to copy your trades. PAMM software makes it possible in a few clicks (and perhaps a signing of a disclosure or risk statement).

one of your competitors, Fxopen, has a great implementation of PAMM on the retail side.

This could be done from the client side also, but isn't as transparent. When offered directly from a backoffice interface with the broker, it's much harder to manipulate results.

Hi, Chris.

Up till now, I still don't get why GoMarkets (and Vantage) can't take clients from the Philippines while other Australia-based brokers do. Maybe you can do a good job of explaining this better.

It's a bit like seeing other people feasting on something that's off-limits to you on doctor's orders:-(
