That said, Trump did just say something that is very true: "we had uncertainty, now we no longer have uncertainty". There's merit to that. This decision was always looming, alongside what POTUS would do, but now there's some knowledge of what is going to happen moving forward.

The less comedic, and more serious answer is: it's all a consumption tax. You don't get sales taxes back. Even income tax "refunds" aren't really refunds, they are just revisions to a calculation. Those promised "tariff stimulus checks"? Those would have been taxed. AND, they likely would have put many people into a higher tax bracket, thus causing those people to have to pay tax whereas they would have paid zero.

....but we have known this all for quite some time, right?

The first scenario there is no tariff.

1) Importer pays $100, consumer pays $120, profit is $20. No tariff, no change in exchange rate.
2) Tariff is 10% but exchange rate drops 10%. Importer pays only $90 to exporter because USD is 10% stronger + $9 to gov for tariff, for $99 total. Consumer pays $120 and importer profits $21.

The importer still pays about the same total cost and makes about the same profit. The consumer still pays the same. And the exporter still receives the same in local currency. Where is the $9 for the tariff coming from? It cannot be from the importer, exporter, or consumer since all costs and profits are the same as before the tariff.

The forex market is the only other entity in the chain so that's where the $9 must be coming from. It is what reduced the price of the product by 10% to offset the tariff.

Miran wrote a paper claiming that very thing: that the foreign currency would fall to offset the tariff and no prices would change. The problem is the opposite happened, presumably because the forex market doesn't want to pay the tariff.

Now the importer pays $110 to the exporter because the exchange rate fell 10% + $11 for tariff, for $121 total. The 10% tariff is costing the importer 20%.

I'm glad there's finally green on the board, but it's a scary time of day to be falling back off resistance levels for equities......we've seen this movie before.....

Miran wrote a paper making the case that tariffs would cause the USD to rise, which would offset the tariff and not change prices (while overlooking the fact that if tariffs did not raise prices then they would defeat the purpose of incentivizing domestic production). But if not for the sell america trade, Miran would be right that the USD would go up and offset the tariff because less USD is sent overseas, so there would be a shortage. But a 10% tariff and a 10% decline in the foreign currency means the importer now only pays $90 to the exporter but also has to pay $9 to the government for a total cost of $99, which he sells to the consumer for $120, making $21 profit. If the consumer pays the same, the importer pays the same ($99 vs $100), and the exporter gets the same in his local currency, then where is the $9 coming from that the government collects?

IF (conditional hypothetical) what Miran said were true (exchange rate declines to offset tariff) then who pays the tariff? My hypothetical example was to show the forex market, by reducing the exchange rate to discount the product, is the only one that could pay the tariff, because nothing else in the scenario changed.

But Miran was wrong (USD got weaker, not stronger). Why? My theory is the forex market did not want to pay the tariff, so the burden was thrust back onto the importer, and then some.

It's impossible to prove intent, so my theory cannot be proved, but it relies on no appeals to authority; just empirical observation.

Grok and Gemini had absolutely no difficulty understanding, so I don't know why you're having such trouble. Maybe it's some unyielding political bias that prevents you from seeing that it is possible for entities other than the importer to pay tariffs if they choose to (ie consumers, exporters, forex markets).

1) The exporter could discount the product to offset the tariff and in that case the exporter is paying the tariff.
2) The consumer could agree to pay a higher price and therefore pay the tariff.
3) The forex market could adjust the exchange rate to offset the tariff and therefore pay the tariff.

Yeah... Oil is up more than 5% in the last 5 days. This is obviously mainly due to the Trump comments on the matter, but I think we might just see something happening in the Middle East. I'm slightly more bullish on /CL after today too, but not enough to put money on the line just yet...
