Donald Trump threatened Monday to stop the opening of a new bridge between the United States and Canada, saying the US should own “at least half” of the still under-construction Gordie Howe International Bridge that links Ontario with Michigan.

Work on the $4.7 billion bridge named after the late Canadian-born NHL great Gordie Howe started in 2018 and is due to open later this year.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them,” Trump posted on Truth Social.


The arrangements were agreed upon a long time ago, in the planning stage. Trump even endorsed it in 2017.

Michigan could not afford to fund the project upfront. So Canada did. They paid for the entire amount, using both US and Canadian materials, and workers from both countries. The agreement was that Canada would keep all the toll revenue, until such time as Michigan's allotment was paid up. After which it would be split 50/50. This seems like a fantastic deal for the USA despite Trump saying otherwise.

As a sidenote the billionaire owners of tbe existing Ambassador Bridge, will lose toll revenue once the new Gordie Howe bridge is opened. Apparently they are big time Trump supporters. And the ONLY ones who will benefit from new bridge being closed They lobbied Trump just a few hours before Trump posted his rant.
