Well, it would be better if he just strokes out suddenly, whenever that may be. If he spirals down into dementia, he will just keep babbling about rigged elections, the evil windmills, etc, and the Trumpist propaganda outlets will humor him until he's actually drooling. It'll be sad to watch.....

All this is exhausting the market close to beyond recovery. Big money is to be made by the traders around the world. I guess there should be a major correction at some point...... probably soon. Be prepared for that.

The Fed just sets the overnight rate - this is the target rate at which commercial banks lend money to each other. The actual overnight rate changes slightly, based on actual transactions. This rate will have the most effect on short term US Treasury note/bill rates and other short term debt instruments. Rates for longer term debt, like the 20/30 yr UST bonds and mortgages, is set more by actual market supply & demand.

The Fed cut 100 bps in late 2024, but the 20/30 yr bond rate has not gone down, it's actually slightly higher now than it was when the Fed stopped cutting. There are things that Trump is doing that will spook the bond market, and that means rates would go up. His meddling with the Federal Reserve is not going to be well-received. His bullying tariff schemes could alienate most sovereign nations and they could stop buying US debt. This could happen at a time when the US is issuing more and more debt, in order to fund the government and make continuing debt interest payments. The latter is now pushing 15% of the total annual US budget. More supply and less demand means rates would have to go up.

Donald Trump has impressive powers as POTUS and he's constantly trying to expand those, but he won't be able to bully the bond market.

If there's any kind of real chance most of the tariffs could be reversed, there will be some short-term volatility, but generally, risk markets would celebrate. However, I'd guess this is just so much more uncertainty, so that is positive for gold. US equities have been printing new ath's in the face of the tariffs, so it's hard to see anything that can stand in the way of the bull run. Except, some serious doubt about the AI/cloud computing dream. That is what has been floating US stocks. That is a bubble that is definitely going to deflate, imo, but calling when that is going to happen is nothing more than guesswork. I'd say goldbugs are ok, for now....

yes youre correct ...the most popular mortgages are 15 and 30 year fixed mortgages so if some maga retard tries to refinance one of those because of a quarter point cut theyll still pay more because of refinance fees

The table captures a lot of actual demographic data. It shows that a male aged 80 actually only has a 6% chance of immediate death, and probably will live another 8 years, on average.

It's the number of years that one has lived with any comorbidities that really brings the life expectancy down. DJT probably been living with morbid obesity for 15-20 years or more, so there's that. Otoh, he's always had the best medical care that money can buy, was never a smoker or drinker, so that's on the plus side.

September probably final leg up before the storm. Data (manipulated or not) continues to present strong levels which will keep the charade going. When layoffs start hitting on the news that is when we have to worry

.....longer-term yields would likely rise, not fall. Why? Because politicized easing would raise the term premium. Investors will demand compensation for an elevated inflation risk, for a heavier Treasury supply pipeline, and for the prospect that today’s “easy policy” becomes tomorrow’s credibility problem. The result would be a steeper yield curve — lower on the front end but higher on the 10s and 30s—the very configuration I have repeatedly warned about.

That steepening would create a quandary for the administration, which has indicated repeatedly that it wants lower long-term yields to make mortgages cheaper and to reduce US debt service cost. How do you force down the long end after you have spooked it? One answer already being floated in policy circles is Yield Curve Control — administratively capping specific Treasury yields with as much Fed purchases as necessary.

....and then he goes on to talk about how that would be a really bad thing to do. It has been done in the 1940s.

The boycotter would risk their own demise.

So let's see how this plays out for US citizens.
Let's assume the tariffs will stay and the Fed cuts the rate.
So American consumers will benefit from lower mortgage repayments, but will suffer a double whammy for whatever they import - the tariff tax and then a lower USD making these imports even more expensive.
Exporters though should benefit from a lower USD making them more competitive and if imports fall because Americans and/or businesses just cannot afford the higher costs, then the trade deficit should decrease.

In the meantime I'll keep trading my counter-trend trading strategy and hope any major corrections stay manageable.

The problem is that people who locked in their rates at 3-4% some years ago, are not willing to sell their homes with the current rates as the mortage would be so much more expensive with current rates. This has a negative affect on the housing markets.

You'll never pay less for your mortgage than the 10 year bonds, it wouldn't make sense otherwise. And FED's decision on rates influence those obviously.
Although it could happen that banks don't lower it when rates go down, it wouldn't make sense either unless they would all agree on it, and that would be illegal.

It would only enhance Trump's objective to turn the USA into a closed, hermit economy.

On an individual level, there is not much choice. Leading export industries include petroleum products (Exxon), aircraft (Boeing), electronics (Apple, Intel, Qualcomm), machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals (Pfizer).

Within that, in electronics is Apple or Intel. So that's something, but remember that Apple is mostly manufactured in Asia, with profits being taxed in Ireland.

Thanks. In Australia all mortgage rates change when the central bank changes -> banks change their rate.

That is, variable. So, any change in central rates has more bite than in the USA. If you compare central banks rates, Australia went up slower and less than the USA, for that reason.

I have no idea how our banks work. True. I can only guess why all rates change - I think fixed are available, but at a big premium to variable, so everyone chooses variable..

Anyway, this gets back to the original post by Sydap2017 who would be correct if it was Australia, but not USA. All clear now. I think.

For the avoidance of doubt (Polimini) the long bond rates are market driven - they may go either up or down with a reduction in the central banks rate.

The number $225K is mentioned. That's pretty sweet. In Australia, the median house is about AUD$912,563. Give or take a whisker. Huge supply problems, very political.

I'm a smart MAGA. I got my interest rate refinanced (2.36%) when they were at an all time low before Biden screwed up the housing market with his inflation and mass illegal immigration policies. It's nice to know rates will slowly come back down again so other new homeowners aren't paying banks more interest on the home of their dreams.

80 years old have usually been retired for many years instead of working on a very hectic and demanding job. He doesn't look like being very well. They are probably pumping him fulll of steroids and that's why he has those black marks on his hands.
