Labour market overview, UK: August 2025

This should be the headline... "UK in Deep Recession" because here is the real data point:

From today's report: "The estimated number of vacancies in the UK fell by 44,000 (5.8%) on the quarter, to 718,000, in May to July 2025. This is the 37th consecutive period where vacancy numbers have dropped compared with the previous three months, with vacancies decreasing in 16 of the 18 industry sectors. Feedback from our Vacancy Survey suggests some firms may not be recruiting new workers or replacing workers who have left."

Yup! Tell me about it, I have been looking for a Job for 8 months now :-(. Frustrating. (Mid management in IT is overfluded. Terrible for me anyway.

The scariest part of these numbers, in my view, isn’t the 4.7% unemployment rate itself , it’s the combination of three trends happening at the same time:Job vacancies have been falling for 37 straight periods . meaning the job market has been losing hiring capacity for over two years.
Payrolled employees have dropped in 10 of the past 12 months . a clear sign that hiring is stalling, even in key sectors.
Unemployment is rising while economic inactivity is falling more people are actively entering the job market, but they’re not finding work because there simply aren’t enough openings.
