ISTANBUL (AP/AFP) - Turkey has decided to block access to the Black Sea from the Mediterranean due to the war in Ukraine, which, like attacker Russia, is located on the Black Sea. No warship is allowed to pass through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus, which together form the waterway.
The Turkish foreign minister bases the measure on an international treaty on access to the Black Sea. Under the 1936 Treaty of Montreux, Turkey has control over the Bosphorus. During wartime or if Turkey itself is threatened, it can deny passage of warships.
