    After months of posturing, Russia has finally invaded Ukraine. The big question for the West now is: Can Russia and President Vladimir Putin be stopped? Putin announced an attack on Ukraine early Thursday local time, declaring the beginning of a “special military operation” aimed at what it called the “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine. In a televised address, Putin said Russia did not plan to occupy Ukraine but wanted to protect its citizens. He also issued a chilling warning that any countries that tried to interfere with Russia’s actions would face “consequences they have never seen.” ... (full story)

Yes it’s an European problem, but Europe is USA’s biggest and most important political and trading partner. Besides this is about breaking international laws and human rights. As a member of the international community, every democratic country has a responsibility to respond and participate in a coordinated actions in order to prevent humanitarian disasters and tensions between countries. Ukraine and Russia do not live alone on this planet.

After so many weeks now of shouting and entranched or prejudiced posts on Ukraine, with misguided perceptions of 'Us' and 'Them, of 'Win' and 'Lose', this seems as good a time as any to mull over some important questions that drive to the heart of the matter and which are as much rhetorical as needing real answers.

1) Of what, exactly, is any regular Russian meant to be afraid with regard to 'The West'? Bearing in mind that NATO is an alliance based only on protection of each other from aggressors, not aggression to dominate all others, 'the West' will never be looking to invade or take over Russia. Surely it is only a case of the Russian Leader and his side-kicks and apparatchiks, wanting to portray 'the West' as aggressors determined to rule Russia.There is a disparity between what the average Russian is likely to want and what the Leader(s) want. In that light, it's a shame that the Russian people are being lead to be pariah's.
2) Of what, exactly, is the Russian Leader(s) frightened with regard to being 'westernised'? Is it genuine Democracy (not the kind practised in Russia, or any other despotic or autocratic stat, which is the " you can have any colour you like so long as it's black") and the loss of their own personal power and wealth (most likely)? If Russia became a genuine democracy, would it not then become welcomed into all the important global influential structures as a leading ally? Would not the Russian people then be served better with the hope of genuine life and wealth expectancy, rather than it being sequestered by the Leader and the henchmen, apparatchiks etc?
3) Plenty of quotes point out how Russia and even Ukraine have so much commodity wealth and this is used as a means to state that Russia holds so much power. That may be true but not necessarily beyond all other regards and it's worth also asking how much more wealth and influence Russia would have as a friendly, non-aggressive, genuinely-democratic developed state. The state and the leaders are holding it back and only a few are gaining extraordinary wealth at the expense of others.
4) Bearing in mind all of the above, arms, weapons and military might in the West will not make the essential difference to bring the Leader(s) in Russia to their senses. Leaders with too much power always develop an interest in geography and Empire, and short of options as to how to improve life for ALL of their people, they resort to Nationalist and Imperial Propaganda and ambitions. So, maybe the best tactic IS to use laser-like focus on the money flows in and around the leaders and NOT hurt the ordinary decent Russian trying desperately to make a living.

@Mitiblotch - my apologies to the progressive part of Eastern Europe and especially to the innocent peoples involved in this conflict which is tragic and a humanitarian crisis.

My point is this - the USA is NOT the world's policeman/policewoman/policeperson (for you progressives)

The reason that the USA cares so much about this?

1. Distraction from problems in the USA - crime, inflation, open southern border, out of control drug overdoses, Covid mandates, etc.,

2. The current POTUS has INVESTMENTS IN THE UKRAINE - see Hunter Biden et al.

3. Nothing like an "enemy" to draw people together - (crap believe IMHO).

What should be happening is Russia's neighbors need to discuss this with Russia, followed by the EU and UN, followed by China (won't happen), then the Arab/Gulf states. After all these "other countries" get involved can the USA chime in.

I'm sorry but as a USA citizen I am firmly against sending ANY American soldier into a battle theatre where the USA has no vested interest.

Russian troops are now fighting in the outskirts of Kiev. If this skirmish eventually turns out to be a total occupation of the Ukraine we will then have exactly what Putin was bemoaning about the intentions of the Ukraine, Russia will be in direct contact with a NATO member-country, namely Hungary.

The nuclear disarmament of Ukraine in 90s was a MAJOR objective of US, Europe and Russias policy. and US was the major mover.. supplying technicians to decommission the missile sites. I remember it.

Well... (removing tongue from cheek) a strong trade is growing between China and Russia. Both parties are keen to tell "the west" where to go. So whilst China continues its expansion into Oceania, Russia may well decide to expand in the opposite direction. I am not proposing that Putin would be 2nd fiddle to anyone, merely that both countries have complementary resources.

Re Russian-Chinese axis: so you think that in the process of trying NOT to become some junior partner to the West (only as that seems to be his fear), Putin would be much happier to be second fiddle to Xi, another, despot? Sanctions on the Russian leaders and Russian exports hurt ordinary Americans minding their own business as well as ordinary Russian citizens. It is only when a people living under evil rulers revolt will things change. Does anyone really think that Germany is going to voluntarily stop the natural gas from flowing from Russia into Germany?

Ordinary people get hurt when politicans start playing games with currencies and sanctions. Ask the people of Iran how THEY like sanctions; oh and ask the Iranian leaders how successful those sanctions are...
