As a trader and investor for many years.. I cant but conclude at this point that the system is broken. The rise in populism is a genuine reaction from a lot of people whove been thrown under the bus. We have created an economic system thru financialisation and the Rentier economy, that is unsustainable. Driving the growth in inequality will bring it all down.
I have been a capitalist all my life. But I must admit its not working any more.
Democratic Government and the economic systems of western economies, are supposed to be there to serve the prosperity and stability of better and more equitable societies. But the opposite is now the norm.

Capitalism has raised the standard of living for billions bringing them out of poverty. Communism has done so for hundreds? Look at Venezuela. From the richest South American nation to the poorest. There is your pessimism. Wages went up under Trump along with record numbers employed. That's in all fields, not just coal miners which I did not single out. Gains outpaced inflation until covid. Biden comes in and crushes the Keystone pipeline wiping out 11k high paying jobs. Utopian pie in the sky green energy does not heat homes or power cars today. The push is on but it will be a long time for either. My utility produces 1% of its electricity from solar. You call it short sighted. I call it realistic meeting today's needs. Show me a place/time in history where communism/socialism has advanced the standard of living. It has always been capitalism and the inventions spawned.

Communism? The current populist reaction to this problem in society of the growing inequality that Ive observed and is widely recorded, is a swing to the authoritarian Fascist side of the political spectrum NOT Left wing and still less Communism.

Revisionist history much? BHO was the longest time stuck in the rut. Trump changed the consumer and business confidence outlooks resulting in the best economy ever, including the roaring comeback after the lockdowns. Got your forward and backwards mixed up.

It's absolutely amazing how some people have changed their true on populism now they believe they have something to benefit from it but when it was trump and brexit populism was a terrible thing. Populism is the concern of the common man now the media is pushing a fake form of populism by getting rid of all dissenting voices and magnifying the voices they wish to be heard the most

But back to the real world of personal ( non vicarious "cinematographical" ) experience: - of the ACTUAL kind:

- windturbines only work in clear Un-cluttered air, not near hills , trees or turbulence of any kind, how come i know this? well i have an array of four brand new turbines sitting in my garage, still in their boxes - they are free to a good home- but remember of course that they do not work if there is no wind!
- micro hydro , again i have a brand new Pelton generator sitting in its box unused, because even though I have a legal water right my property (going back 156 years ) there is not enough head pressure / throughput, from the gravity feed 80 meters up in the ravine where the aquifer springs from.
- PV Solar array with deep cycle battery array and inverter etc..... my next door neighbour built a totally off grid solar solution twelve years ago costing $NZD60K, but he could never be self sufficient in the winter months - and has to use a massive diesel backup generator.
and of course the sun don;t shine at night time !
but the real kicker is the batteries have started failing, and even allowing for reconfiguring the controller from 48V cell by cell descending as they fail, within a year, he now is having a contractor and lines company re wire him up for mainline grid connection - just another 40-50 K or so.

just real life experience .... not cinematographic bias.

the bottomline is.....
( and it is a costly bottomline) all this virtue signalling by the greens and world governments about going totally off oil and gas is NOT going to happen - the capacity to run the bulk of the world's population just does NOT exist.

The only saving grace for a small country like New Zealand is, that it rains a lot here, we have massive hydro lakes ( that act as storage )
for our renewable hydro-electric grid generation, but with the current population expansion it is operating at close to full capacity, and they are not cheap to implement.

Good post. Your personal experiences are interesting. And as always useful.
But while appreciating the points made, I do see the current value of these experiences as open to some challenge.

1. You instance Wind Turbines and a mini-Hydro system, and dismiss because in neither case are either of these systems suitable for your local environment. Bit like rubbishing whole idea of surfboards because you live in Kansas.

2. The solar voltaic installation you instance is a 12 years old, legacy installation costing NZ$60k and proved inadequate for winter self sufficiency. I question this example is relevant to the economics of PV today.
Since 2008 solar efficiency has risen by 60% in the intervening years with corresponding plummeting installation costs.

3. I cannot comment on the battery failure instance you describe, or the recycling cost problem you instance, except to say that the whole economics of static (and EV) battery technologies today, as distinct from the legacy systems as you describe, are evolving at a revolutionary pace. Ive no doubt the NZ problem you instance is valid. I just wonder if these problems apply equally to the new generations of storage devices.

So while I value your real life examples, I think perhaps current pace of technology development and associated mass production economies make them less relevant than at first might appear, to project viability decisions being made today.

IMHO what IS essential is that as we commercialize the battery revolution that all such new productive technology L-ion etc is compulsorily wrapped into a product lifetime responsibility that ensure that include a recycling cost tax. (The EU has already embraced this concept but much more needs to be done.)
Such macro-costing which is now common in the nuclear industry, embraces lifetime operational costing that includes waste disposal and decommissioning costs in project assessment. Applying this discipline in a national licencing regime in or example the battery business does represent a big challenge.

Huge and very interesting subject for investors. But as you imply perhaps less so for Fx day-traders.

Generally I agree with your post Ross but I don't think capitalism is the issue here. Part of it relates to demographics, some of it relates to elements of globalisation, a lack of central bank independence does not help, but the overwhelming majority relates to poor governance across the Western world. I think the FED entered dangerous territory when it accepts mandates in addition to sound monetary policy - i.e. papering over the cracks.

No I think you are just picking and choosing your metrics, ie trump got coal miners working which was short sited another thing most of the employment created in the trump regime came with lower wages so people are still struggling to eek out a decent living but now they are to busy to do anything about it. Its not just in the US, its everywhere conservatives rule right back to the dawn of civilization, they don't have forward vision. Live in denial if you like but its the good times the liberals bring that gives these right-wingers the luxury of pessimism.
