Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son, the founder of conglomerate SoftBank, personally lost over $130 million when he sold his position in bitcoin, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Son made the investment in late 2017 the report said, near the digital currency’s record high near $20,000 in December of that year. Bitcoin has traded around $5,000 in recent weeks. While it is unknown exactly how much bitcoin Son bought, he sold early last year after the speculative digital currency’s value collapsed. The only guys I know that made money where those who actually got some business going and they got it right so it started to grow. They make occasionally some money from the markets - same as I do, we even do some trades and speculation together - but we never forget what is the primary drive of our welfare.

So I guess - people will HODL their sweaty encrypted files until something else (like the colour of Venus) gets hyped in the next 8-10 years.

It is cyclical - the big money need to drain periodically from the lower classes - it is how the system works:

1999 - internet companies bubble
2008 - subprime bubble
2018 - virtual money bubble

Am I the only one who sees a pattern?!

I can't believe someone was that stupid to buy bitcoin below 20k. I have never seen media push an "investment" so badly, as they were convincing people to buy bitcoin...so it was obvious someone wants to take people's cash savings right before christmas 2018.

This is not a currency it is a joke. Bitcoin is, and continues to be, a joke. I'm not going to join in with the fanatical discussion above but imagine this:

Imagine if you ran a business which paid its staff in bitcoin (deliberate small 'b' ). When it came out you would choose a pay rate. Within a year or two you would be bankrupt and your employees would be millionaires. Then the reverse occurs. This is not a currency, it is pure speculation. It's a scam. Why value it in dollars? It has no real value.

In the article they don’t know how many bitcoins but as he purchased near record high 19k and probably sold at desperation at 5-6k - so 13k per Bitcoin - I would say 10000 Bitcoins to sum up to a 130 000 000$ loss (actually not a loss - someone else pocketed his money).

And my prediction was not about the Bitcoin prices - but about people stopped posting everywhere (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) in the last 12 months about cryptocurrency, ICOs, crypto evangelism (and some other clinical psychological sicknesses) - so my prediction was that it will pass an year after Bitcoin prices crashed before some major “players” (played) start to admit their huge losses.

I expect next one to be in the range of 300-400 million dollars.

(By the way I have 20+ experience in the field of embedded and industrial computer software).

When you base some predictions on future tech you should keep in mind how much the technology would progress for the next 5-15 years (since you talk about grand children). You remember the computers of 1999? (because I do), and what was the level of internet’s capabilities?

So imagine what would be in 15 years - and if the whole concept of having an encrypted file made out of pseudo-random bytes “protected” by the supposedly unbreakable public database?! My guess is the technology would start to crack down on the old “protected” information (like your precious files) and after several massive hacks (that will happen with the new quantum computing coming) - all this “tech” your money rely upon will be obsoleted overnight.

But my guess is the encrypted files will start to become useless way before that. Those will remain in the hands of some nerds and geeks - same as the people that now collect postal stamps, classic cars, etc - the market will be very limited and useless for the masses.

I’m yet to see anything of concrete in your postings besides the conspiratorial sensation about some system behind the scenes - you start to sound like chronology writer for the Cold War Soviet secret services.

It is quite simple - greed, and smoke and mirrors. There are ordinary people that constantly try to convince other ordinary people that something is of value (properties, cars, arts, crypto files) - until real money (high liquidity exchange instrument) exchange hands. Then quite often - that subject of value start to depreciate in real money’s value. This is the moment where the owner of the subject of value has given his purchase powered money for something with poor liquidity. This game is being played for thousands of years. I see that it got quite heated.

But in the battle of words and personality insults - the story got lost.

The moral here is that people with more financial capabilities can make mistakes and can sustain losses - the size is relevant to their wealth. I remember the guy that had apologised on Youtube for losing 200 million on NGAS shorts (price later came in his favour but too late I guess).

This story shows that everyone can lose on the markets - big or small fish. And also shows that media-hyped financial instrument (in this case the BTC) can be financial poison if handled at incorrect time.

Personally, I think BTC will never regain price and popularity it once had. It has been suppressed too long, technology is going ahead - new ways of combining and protecting information will emerge that would undermine the blockchain paradigm. I guess digital currency IS somewhere in the horizon but on that horizon - the law, government, regulations and banks will be part of it - it is how the human society works in the modern world.

I see here a lot of people shouting pro and against with red faces and eyes filled with emotion - but it is pointless - this debate will be settled when future show if BTC was worthy or not.

Ohhh so very true. Recently here in NZ there’s been advertising that can only be described as SCAMMING. I’ve been approached by friends asking for my opinion, my response is avoid these scams at all costs. As we all know it takes money to make money and these get rich quick merchants are only looking for some one to form the basis of their pyramid investments...

Maybe another way of seeing this - Son cut his losses. Sometime to learn from there. Learn when to cut it loose when you know you made the wrong decision. Something I am still learning - cut my losses. 😂

I didn’t buy into this Crypto currency nonsense too. When people around me are buying and tell me how much money they made, including my man, I told him it’s all hype and he better realise his profit before the hype died down and it crash. Luckily he listened and cashed in. Long story short, I had a lovely gift for Xmas. ❤️ And he never went back to ‘investing’ in bitcoin.

If you don’t understand it, don’t buy it.

I am keen to see how Softbank’s investment in WeWork goes. It’s in the billions red, with more expansion instead of profitability plans ahead. That is one interesting one to watch.
