I was reading Trade Mindfully by Gary Dayton when came across this section, so I thought I share it here.

"Before we leave this topic, there is an important note regarding positive self‐talk with which traders should be aware. Repeating positive affirmations such as, “every day, I’m becoming a better and better trader,” are widely believed to change one’s negative thinking, boost mood, and promote enhanced self‐esteem. This is not true. Joanne Wood, psychologist from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, led a research effort to study positive self statements in relation to self‐esteem. She and her team found that those with low self‐esteem actually felt worse when they repeated positive self statements or considered the truth of the statements. Those for whom positive self‐talk is aimed to help were found to do worse. People with higher self‐esteem did feel a little better after repeating their affirmations, but not by much. The bottom line message here is that positive self statements are contraindicated; they should not be used. This is especially so for those whose sense of self‐worth runs low."

You are probably right, although I have no knowledge of the above mentoined experiment's conditions.

I did read Mr. Hill's book a few times but I get a sort of "make-believe" vibe from it despite reading it with an open mind. That is why I can't help but wonder whether is it really possible to "convince" yourself of being something that you actually not yet are by repeating a statement. It is just my opinion though.

The written-down plan, however, is something that makes perfect sense to me. Studies agree that it is much more likely that you will reach the goal you set for yourself if you have a detailed, step-by-step plan. In fact, Charles Duhigg suggests in his Faster Smarter Better book that longer horizon goals (visions) combined with SMART goals are by far the most effective way to achieve any desired result.

Right. Mr Hill's book is about choosing those goals, then doing exactly what you said, step-by-step plan. To reinforce it, you read it aloud to yourself because your subconscious needs to "hear" it in order to turn it into consciousness. Be aware, your subconscious never sleeps, even when you sleep, so it hears everything, but cannot filter out what you want to hear vs "everything". So by repeating your goals to yourself aloud, you are telling it what to hear. If you actually ever try it, you will be surprised how things suddenly start to align toward your goals.

The premise is not making believe just anything. Even in the Bible it says you need to believe something is true even if there is no evidence. It is called faith, another subject Mr Hill discusses quite a bit, and the various factors (fears) that affect your faith. You have to target your faith to what you believe, or desire to believe, or else you are just reciting words that have no meaning.

Even though I am aware of the power of this process, and still practice it, one time I saw a video about challenging things into existence, lol. The guy said to command the universe to give you a penny and see what happens. So, I did it. The very FIRST time I left my house was about a week later. I parked at the grocery store, opened my car door, and there on the ground were two brand new shiny pennies!! I had not even got out of the car yet, lol. I almost stepped on them. Can you believe that? So, it is just a matter of applying faith to your goals. If you think you can, or you think you cannot, you are correct.

No offense, but I am not sure you comprehended the message yet. Try reading Chapter 2 again so you see the steps of goal setting and bringing your subconscious on board with your plan. Also, you might try listening to an audio book from youtube. Maybe listening to it rather than reading it will trigger a different understanding.

I take no offense in well intended advices. Your posts are very thought provoking and very well written.

I prefer reading books to listening to them, although I regularly do both. I will probably re-read Think and Grow Rich. By the way, since you seem to know your stuff around these topics, what is your opinion about visualization?

I didn't get it either the first few times, lol. I started listening to the audio book while I drove and that helped a little more. I wish he didn't call it a secret, lol, and just said what he meant. I think when I heard a sermon about Jesus and the fig tree and moving mountains and about super natural power and faith, then suddenly it all made sense, lol. It is the exact same thing, only less religious. The concept is that whatever the mind can conceive, and believe, it can achieve. However, it is not about making wild imagination come true, but instead using definiteness of purpose, or focusing on the goals that mean something to you, that you are passionate about.

To help believe I can achieve my goal, it is nice to see photos of the things I want to acquire. I have a slide show for affirmations, but I have another slide show for visualizing future goals. My affirmations are in the present tense, while my visualizations refer to the future. It requires less imagination since I can see the actual objects. It helps me stay focused and organize my priorities. For instance, if there is a property or house you would like to buy, find a photo of it, and review it daily. As you look at it, you can feel your desire to own it, but also think about the steps you need to take to own it. So, it is double duty, lol. The "end result" as a physical object in the form of a photo, and the strategy you will employ to acquire it.

Very nice....Exactly my thought but words like before should be read as when unless one has supernatural skills to know what is going to happen in the future AND I believe maybe you have left out a vital part of continued success is that all trades must have a RRR of more than 2X for sustainable success. Anything less should be considered a failure.
Once again good job........
The trading method can be use by anybody including beginners and it can immediately be able to generate gains straight away when applied. Period.
