I live in a Western State in the US where mail-in voting is common. Ballots have been sent out to all registered voters by mail since 1991. I remember voting at polling places in 1984 & 1988, & that's the last time I didn't vote by mail. They also have ballot drop boxes, where you fill out & sign the same ballot that you'd mail in, and go to locations where you drop it in a box. It's about 55/45 in the whole State, with slightly more people using drop boxes as compared to mail-in. Nobody is checking your ID or for valid registration at the drop boxes.

However, in my State, you have to prove you are citizen in order to register to vote. Ballots are mailed to registered voters only. Most States (38) have some form of ID requirement like this - you must prove citizenship to register. But 12 do not. I don't have any problem with reasonable measures being taken by States to ensure that only citizens are voting.

Another bone of contention is the time required to count all votes. I don't see how this could not be improved. CA is the worst, with some vote counting seeming to go on weeks after Election Day. Granted, CA is a huge State, both by area and population. But FL is also very big and they get vote counting done quickly. If FL can do it, I don't see how all States can not be expected to do the same.

Really though, all of the above is worthy of debte, but the real issues are Democracy itself, and Donald Trump. Trump will simply not accept the results of any election that he loses. He has pretty much admitted this, ver batim. He will even claim fraud in elections that he wins, but only by less than a large margin. It doesn't matter who he is running against - when he lost to Republican Ted Cruz in the Iowa primary in 2016, he claimed Cruz won by fraud.

It's tempting to yell that Trump is a fascist. But Trump is just a Trumpist. Democracy is a messy system of government that requires people of all opposing views and interests to work out solutions to all kinds of problems, for the common good of all. There will always be some people who feel like they get the short end of the stick, and that's the messy part. Donald Trump could care less about common good. He is interested only in what's good for Trump and what consolidates Trump's power.

It's not popular to argue against Democracy. In favor of what, then - Monarchy? Feudalism? Anarchy? There's the problem. There are honest people on the right who will do it though. They are not running for office, usually. Really, though, there are obvious problems with Democray. It's alarming how stupid people are: about 1 in 5 adults in the US are illiterate. (That means they can not read.) Shouldn't there be some sort of literacy test? About 15% of US adults can't read or speak English. Should they be allowed to vote? How are you going to decide on different ballot initiatives etc, if you can't even read? And don't even get me started on the Poor, women, the Nwords, fags and other deviants, commies, atheists, and so on. Wouldn't it be better if only people like me (rich, Christian white men) were voting? Hey, that's the way it was in the first many decades of the Republic.

That is abundantly normal in many countries and as an outsider I fail to understand what the issue is. It seems as if you guys go a step further with your ballet drop boxes which is perhaps novel.

"Hey, that's the way it was in the first many decades of the Republic." I have noted elsewhere recently that the US adopted universal suffrage circa 1965.

The right to vote is a human right, and universal suffrage is the accepted democratic standard for implementing that right.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to take part in the government of their country, directly or through freely chosen representatives, and that the will of the people should be expressed through "periodic and genuine elections by universal and equal suffrage."

This is not an absolute right, though - age, citizen etc.

edit - a tiny editorial as I interpret circumstances having thought about it for a nanosecond. In most democracies, the burden has effectively shifted from previously; Governments now are generally having to justify restrictions on voting rights by whatever means possible, rather than citizens having to justify why they should be allowed to vote.

Maybe some people don't grasp the import of any of this and even consider as prudent the blatant backdoor methods of authoritarians making things difficult even for many eligible voters. Maybe where I am coming from is diametrically different to America in that Australia asks "how do we ensure that everyone participates?" reflecting different conceptions of the relationship between citizens and the state.

I'm not American and i don't have a horse in this race, but voting by mail and the ID situation in the US is insane. Trump isn't always wrong and you give me some weird wins.

The boxes in Portland, OR were guarded by armed police 24hrs a day. The problem is far worse than putting a piece of paper in the mail. You’re not wrong at all, and I dont have an answer but I’d certainly rather mail it in then stand in line in this current atmosphere.

Democrat socialists have been using invalid mail - in ballots to stuff the ballot boxes for years. Mail - in voting is far more prone to invlalid voting than in person with photo ID. This is obvious to all with objectivity and common sense.
