Within months of coming to the White House for the second time, President Donald Trump signed an executive order in May 2025 to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The move signaled a radical shift in how the U.S. government maintains its reserves and could accommodate the leading cryptocurrency. The order mandated creating a reserve with Bitcoin forfeited by government agencies as part of asset seizures and asked the Treasury and Commerce Departments to develop budget-neutral strategies to acquire more Bitcoin.
