In a lot of ways China is what the US would like to think it is. For all the patriotic talk about capitalism and free markets, China is one where the big government can't be called upon to defend the monopolization of ideas for profit and to the detriment of the people, and therefore China has robust competition while the US is a collection of monopolies, which cause the consumer to pay more but lavish the monopolists (capitalists). That could have been mentioned in that same documentary. The onus should be on those who conceive the idea to defend it in the marketplace by continued innovation to stay on top, and they already had a head start, so why should they get government help.

I don't know much about the Iranian government, but I know where there is oil or cheap labor the West will meddle as much as it can, so it's hard to make any judgement without taking the meddling into account, which is impossible for me to quantify. All I have to go on is my intuition.

I've never really listened to David Frum except when he barked some ad hominems at chomsky, who promptly shut him down. It's nothing new that Iran could take punishment without surrendering. Japan suffered total naval destruction in ww2 along with many cities carpet-bombed and then 2 nukes but still wouldn't surrender until the Russians marching down through Manchuria convinced them it was futile to continue, and even then the emperor had to break the tie vote of his cabinet because 3 out of 6 wanted to keep fighting.
