No bullet trajectory could have caused the ear wound without first going through the forehead. The wound could have been shrapnel or something else but not a bullet.

You can see there are two wounds on his ear. Most of the blood is coming from the inner wound. The report probably categorizes both wounds as parts of the same ear wound, but there are two distinct marks.
