No one wanted to surrender to Russia. Everyone would rather surrender to the US. The emperor had a good deal with the US that he could stay in power, so after Russia invaded Manchuria with 1.5 million troops Japan basically ran into the arms of the US.

According to the US energy information they import more oil than any other country equating to 8.42 million barrels PER DAY. 1.3 million per day from the Middle East ( OPEC).

This is why it matters.
