Oil and gas runs the world, 20% gut in supply will be a problem, no matter how you look at it.

West Asian oil is the cheapest oil in the world, it cost the saudis, Iraqis, Kuwaitis and Iranians under 10$ for a barrel, North Sea oil is around 50-60$ a barrel, American shell oil is around 40$ - this is production cost.

We as humans use oil for everything, plastic, asphalt, lubricator, energy, cooking gas and other applications.
- Removing the cheapest oil in the market might produce consequences only big powers with insight, like US, Iran, China and Russia know - which is why Iran decided to use this joker card.

It looks like Iran's tactic is to put economic pressure on the region, and so force the gulf states pressure US/Isreal to persue peace talks. It's a game of chicken now. Iran is willing to crash the global economy (unless US gets Isreal back under control), can the US (and Trump in particular) survive the crash?

A short sharp shock might be bearable, but weeks or months is gonna trigger global inflation and possible recession.

Oil only needs to stay elevated; circa $80 for a period of time to exert inflationary pressures and the whole ( potential ) cutting cycle of the Fed is off the table .

Inflation would increase by 1% in a matter of months pushing into supply chains , transport and energy costs . It’s the Achilles heel of the global economy and Irans ( potentially) trump card ; no pun intended .

They’re actually flipping the narrative and pressuring the US to come to the table. Strategy wise they’re playing a blinder , providing the pressure can be sustained . That in itself is what the US will want to negate very quickly and move the strategic advantage back in their favour .

You kind of have to believe this was priced in though. Maybe it was priced into the 74-76 range, but if anyone thought the escalation path COULDN'T include this potential, then I don't know what to tell them.

I heard/read that suppliers in the gulf can continue to produce for a couple/few weeks (20+ days?) before storage capacities become saturated. Considering the fact that the situation is 3 days old, that timeframe is a long way off.

I guess Iran could think they will use this as a bargaining chip down the road ("ceasefire and we will open the strait"), but I don't know that Trump would even care.....He seems more inclined to just say "Don't you worry Iran, the US military will open the strait for you.....and for the world...." (I had a pithy jab here in Trumpian rhetoric, but don't really feel humor surrounding the seriousness of war/loss of life is appropriate, so I will refrain. Insert your own while reading this....)

There was a world wide coalition of genozidal states against the Houthis who had been under blockade for 10 years prior to the implemented blockade, Houthis have primitive weapon arsenal compared to Iran and Bab-El-Mandeb is far wider than Strait of Hormuz - the strait at its most narrow width is only 39km.

Your hypothesis is already proven wrong by a much smaller, weaker and none state actor in a location bigger than this particular strait.

Another issue is insurance, Lloyd insurance in the city of London will rack up premiums.

In regards to western countries, full war is the max they can do, its not like bringing in troops from Sweden or Germany will make any difference - currently there is full war, if western populace like it or not, nothing can or will change.

UK, France, Italy, US, Pizrael, Bahrain, UAE, Germany, Canada and some other smaller powers against the Houthis and they did not manage to break the blockade, they bombed everything but had to retreat after couple of months, because Houthis kept hitting ships and insurance went crazy - back then, also - only China and Russia were allowed to transit.

Iran is 100x the strength of Houthis, it have satellites, advanced drones, rockets, radars - the Houthis had none of that.

I dont know what the price of oil will be, but I know if Iran decide to close the strait, it will be closed and there is nothing ANYONE can do anything about it.

Last thing, the oil belongs to the people of region, its not like Iran is stealing German or US oil, this idea that western nations have right to enjoy our oil, sanction us and bomb us at will and we just need to accept it - is a supremacist idea that belong to the garbage of history.

Sadly, however, I think (and, again, it is just my naive gut feeling) this plays right into Trump's hands. Now he gets to tell the world that he was right. Iran just tries to squeeze everyone and will stop at nothing to destroy democracy, etc, etc, etc. So, he amps up the military action.
