Companies shed a seasonally adjusted 32,000 jobs during the month, the biggest slide since March 2023, payrolls processing firm ADP reported Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for an increase of 45,000. ADP - A Decisive Miss That Vindicates "Weakening" Thesis
ADP report was a significant downside surprise, showing a loss of -32,000 jobs against a consensus expectation of a +52,000 gain. Critically, the prior month's print was also revised down from +54,000 to a contraction of -3,000. This is the first major piece of "hard" labour data this week, and it decisively validates the story told by yesterday's "soft" data (JOLTS quit rate, Consumer Confidence). It directly challenges the "resilience" narrative built on last week's strong backward-looking GDP and spending data and confirms, as ADP's chief economist stated, that "employers have been cautious with hiring."

Implications for my Strategic Views - Stagflation Strengthens, Soft Landing Weakens
- Moderate Stagflation:
This report significantly strengthens my base case. The "weakening labour market" is a core tenet of this scenario, and a negative print, combined with downward revisions, is a major step in that direction.

- Soft Landing:
The probability of a soft landing is materially diminished by ADP print. A soft landing requires a gradual, controlled cooling of the labour market, not an outright contraction. This report suggests the slowdown may be happening faster and more abruptly than a soft landing scenario would allow.

- Hard Landing:
The risk of a "growth collapse" scenario has increased. While not a collapse in itself, a negative print well below consensus raises the probability of a non-linear deterioration in the labour market going forward.

Implications for the Fed - A Green Light for Easing
Data provides powerful ammunition for the dovish wing of the FOMC. It directly validates their recent pivot and their stated concerns about "risks to employment." Following yesterday's weak confidence data, this report makes it very difficult for any remaining hawks to argue for a pause in the easing cycle. This print solidifies market expectations for a 25bps cut in October & December, and will likely increase bets on a deeper cutting cycle into 2026.

The focus would normally now shift to Friday's NFP report to either confirm or deny this sudden loss of momentum, however with the Government shutdown in effect - this hard data may now become critical for market pricing, as evidence by the slight increase of a double cut in December before year end (below).

SIMPLE: During and for the year after Covid employers a difficult time finding employees; some left the workplace for good, others died but from 2020-2021 hiring was tough. We kept more employees than necessary because they we in demand

Since then wages for employees kept rising so prices were raised until 2025 - prices couldn't be raised any more - consumer push back

Now 2025 - Businesses have to increase the pay of key people but are using AI to "fill the gaps" to become more productive - hence less hiring or simply waiting for people to retire/leave and not fill their position.

Real inflation, in the real world, is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5% per month. All anyone has to do is go look at grocery prices, insurance, rent, clothing, services, etc. Maybe large durable goods are inflating at 0.50%/month, so your washing machine and fridge is not skyrocketing per se, but anything you consume quickly is mooning. Equity markets love it, though, and it makes sense.

The problem with ADP data, based allegedly on payroll, is that they are frequently wrong to the extent that I am not sure why we continue bothering with them.

On the other note, regarding the tales of the crashing Trump's economy while the data for the past nine month uniformly verify the economy is booming, I will paraphrase Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain): "The reports of my demise were highly exaggerated."

Finally, the hopes and beliefs of the left, based merely on their political proclivities and a bias rather than on economic data, are by definition wrong.

Inflation environment? Take heart. The annual rate inflation is a low of 2.1% to 2.9% depending on the Index you take. The average annual rate of inflation has been 3.28% over the last 50 years.

If you're an employer you want to retain your good, experienced and highly productive employees. Those people are in inflation environment so you need to wage rise to keep them or they can easily walk into new job still. If you lose them you lose experience that will be expensive or impossible to recover. Wages go up.

Average or low experience employees you can cut freely because soft labour market means you can just hire those roles back later. Job count goes down.
