The US economy is worse off than it was before when it imported the product.

That a tax makes it appear otherwise is a really good example of why taxes distort decisions away from the optimal allocation of resources.

Notice that a few years ago many American companies "outsourced" their customer service to India. It was all the rage. But now, all these services have come back to the US, the quality likely to be the main reason.

And hey, look at what good those tariffs have done for the progress of India! Open your eyes.

Yes, there are other factors of course, but tariffs and protectionism are probably quite significant in the scheme of things.

You can have zero tariffs if ya want Cowboy, but no Indian is going to buy your MAGA Garbage.

Last week, I bought a jar of hamburger (sliced) dill pickles from the store. I took a look at the ingredient label. Guess where they came from? They tasted like it, too. I could not find any brand of sliced dill pickles that were made in the US. Go figure.

You have Product X.
India manufactures it using local materials and local labor. Product costs 15$ and it's listed at 30$ in India.
US manufactures it using local materials and local labor. Product costs 70$ and it's listed at 150$ in the US.
Let's also assume the product made in India is 30% less qualitative than the US one

A US entrepreneur can create a business and starts importing the 30$ Indian product (assuming list price, not discounted) which he then lists it on the US market for 100$ negotiable. Even at 30% less quality than the US product, it can still sell pretty well.

An Indian entrepreneur will not jump at the opportunity of importing a 150$ US product (assuming list price, not discounted) on top of which you add import duties/tariffs, because he can't turn a profit in India given the prohibitive cost of the product. Even with 0 tariffs in India it's still not profitable.

So you do have two parties, but it's a one sided relationship.

A lot of these situations where created by "successful entrepreneurs" who buy cheap (low) and sell expensive (high) = taaaadaaaaa profit
