We are reaping the fruits of this successful Stalin's anti-fascist campaign even today and that is the reason for the confusion.

The wiki data can be ranked per overall violent crime total, as a number per 100,000 residents. D.C. doesn't crack the top 20 (#25). I have been to DC many times and been in both good parts and bad, walked around at night, alone and with high-class ladies (ahem) and I never really felt afraid. The place is crawling with cops. The recent case of "Big Balls" nearly getting carjacked - the cops were on the scene in < a minute. Idk where else in America there's that kind of response. Most places, you're lucky if they show up in <15 minutes. If you're talking property crime only, I'd say the majority of places they won't bother to send anyone at all.

You want to be scared, try walking around at night in downtown or certain areas in Memphis, NOLA, Houston, or Jackson, MS. You will be fucked with if you do that enough times.

Really, though, there are bad parts of every city in America and it's easy enough to avoid them. And the cops are at least much more present in the cities, for what it's worth. In lots of rural areas of the US, you're pretty much on your own. The constabulary is woefully understaffed and underfunded and spread out over some large areas. (Many US counties are > 15,000 sq. mi. - take a couple of those and you've got an Austria or a Portugal.)

The US is suffering under a long-running epidemic of meth (and now fentanyl) use. The tweakers are desperate and will look to steal anything they can. They especially love metals, which can be sold quickly at scrap yards. If you have a construction site where you have to store any metals in quantity (rebar, pipe, fixtures, fencing, etc) you need to have armed guards onsite 24/7, or the tweakers will be there....

But comparing Trump's actions to possible actions by two of the least democratic societies on the planet is a very low bar. The only way this is valid is if you've given up and accept, or want, a dictator. There's a certain amount of indoctrination that's gone on to take an essentially open society, and get folk to say nonsense like this.

Yes, family vacation last year, 5 days. Walked 15k plus steps each day, also rode Lime bikes and took public transportation. Stayed south of the "rectangle" even (worse area than northside) right across from NASA. Walked to wharf and back from there also, all times of day and night, walked the entire main areas. Saw all of the sites while doing so. no problems whatsoever. Trump is a psychopath, and his maga cult cannot be more blindly brainwashed.

Martial law in DC is a test case for the same in US "blue" cities.
