  • Former Bitcoin Dev Gavin Andresen Revises 2016 Blog Post, Calls Trust in Craig Wright a ‘Mistake’

    From news.bitcoin.com

During the first week of Feb. 2023, the United Kingdom Court of Appeal overturned a High Court decision from March 2022 in the case of Craig Wright’s Tulip Trading Limited (TTL) vs. 16 cryptocurrency developers. The case will proceed to trial as Wright, who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, stated his team was “delighted” with the judges’ decision to overturn the March dismissal. Meanwhile, former Bitcoin core developer Gavin Andresen revised a 2016 blog post, insisting that it was a “mistake to trust Craig Wright as much as I did.” Court of Appeal Allows Tulip Trading Case to Proceed to Trial; Gavin ... Never mind that the blog post says "During our meeting, I saw the brilliant, opinionated, focused, generous... person that matches the Satoshi I worked with six years ago." Never mind that the blog post outlines how CW signed for Gavin, who is a foremost bitcoin expert and nearly impossible to trick. Forget all that big-picture stuff... let's zoom in, way in, and take a look at this ambiguous correction that Gavin made to said blog post. That's the important part!

This attack is so textbook. Every time it's a) zoom past a bunch of context that delegitimizes the attack, then b) focus on a little detail that makes the attack seem legit. It's a shallow technique, but it works like a charm. This is the same technique that underlies cancel-culture -- zoom in on one day/action/tweet/statement and anyone can be painted a shithead.

Btw, the reason Gavin regrets getting involved in the debate is because the crypto industry made his life hell after he spoke the truth. Read the stories... bunch of rabid emos I tell ya. Gavin seems like a big-hearted guy, so it's no surprise that it's tearing him up that he vouched for the asshole that is CW. He can't bring himself to lie, so he does what he can to oblige the crypto industry with ambiguous statements like this blog correction. Poor guy.
