How Sam Bankman-Fried’s sentence stacks up against the century’s biggest fraudsters
Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the defunct crypto exchange FTX who was convicted on fraud and conspiracy charges last year, was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday in New York court. His sentence is well below the maximum statutory sentence of 115 years and the 40- to 50-year sentence prosecutors had sought, but also significantly above the six-and-a-half-year sentence his attorneys wanted. The judge in the case, US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, rejected the argument from SBF’s lawyers that the harm from his fraud was effectively “zero” given that it now seems that the billions of dollars in lost FTX ...
