As I've said, it takes away potential profit, but the effect is negligible on a competent trader's profitability. People lose because they don't know how to do and/or how to be. Certainly not for us retail, unless you run your own HFT shop

It's not that HFT would make someone unprofitable. It's that it works just like inflation in that it is a hidden tax, and an unfair one. EDIT: Better yet, think of it like hidden extra spread that you keep paying without even noticing.
