philmcgrew replied Oct 10, 2007Kathy Lien gives several pages of reasons why the USD is preferred in her book including the reason Vikrant states. Her references show that over 90% of all currency trades involve the USD.

philmcgrew replied Oct 10, 2007I'm not sure how you define a large trend but the GBPUSD has moved in excess of 1000 pips 3 times this year and is just about to finish up a 4th. And, we still have almost a full quarter of trading.

philmcgrew replied Oct 10, 2007You do not have to have a good entry system to beat the market. As a matter of fact, many entry systems are less than 50% accurate which is obviously less than a coin flip. You can prove this by using a timed exit only with your entry system. Tell ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007I called and they said you were right. All of their clients are up 125% on the GBPJPY carry trade this year just as you predicted. I guess I didn't get the memo.

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007It's your game and your rules but I hate to see you ruin it with scaling out. I noticed that you are using the GBPUSD. Even on a good day it has an ATR of less than 150 pips so you are effectively throwing that one away. If you are going to make ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007If you used a stop you would have been stopped out of the trade when it dropped 3000 pips. How is that 80%? Here's the situation posed by the author on the very first post of this thread: Even if you look at GBP/JPY this year alone it's interesting. ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007Can you please explain the math behind this. I'm quite interested in making an easy 80% per year. So far your answers have been more slippery than those of a female presidential candidate. If you can't back up something you say or read then you have ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007Let's assume it is 2 pips or you can insert a number if you have a better one. Now show me how I can make 80% so far this year. I still didn't catch your answer on how many years you've been long GBPJPY. After all, we live in an expansionist nation ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007Interesting. How many years have you been long the GBPJPY now? I know you're a news trader (or reporter) but could you show some math on how you arrived at 80% interest for the year?

philmcgrew replied Oct 9, 2007I buy dips on uptrends, sell peaks on downtrends, trade tops and bottoms in choppy markets, and trade breakouts in flat ones (easier said than done but that's what my plan says). I know enough about math and statistics from my engineering days to ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007Why don't you tell people what the institutional account minimums are to realize that spread and then take a guess as to how many people here meet that requirement. Let's either drop this or keep it realistic.

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007You are correct, I neglected to quote futures on a per side bases. However, in the final analysis, that does little to sway the arguement. It should have been $5.64 vs. $4.

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007The DJIA and Euro are not the same and the contract sizes are very different. We'll leave it to the readers to decide what's best for them. A 1 tick spread on the CAD implies plenty of liquidity. And most countries do tax forex like any other ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007Let's be fair and compare apples to apples. We'll use the USDCAD since the USD is the base currency on both futures and forex and they both have a contract size of $100,000 and since they are at parity it can't get much more equal than that. A tick ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007OK, I swore I wouldn't reply to you (I cut a deal which leaves me doing dishes) but it's not the same. A YM tick is $5 and a EURUSD pip is $10. 2 pips is not equal to 2 ticks. It's twice as much.

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007I pay 0.2 pips per side. I can't speak for everyone else. My only point is that, in general, the average trader who frequents these forums realizes a much higher spread than the average e-mini trader. And for that reason, day trading forex is more ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007Isn't a tick on the YM $5? A pip is not a tick. In your example you are paying 50% less than a forex trader. There are 2 basic types of brokers in forex: fixed spread which is somewhat wide or variable spread which is narrower and charges a ...

philmcgrew replied Oct 8, 2007I think one big point that's being missed here is that becuase of the large spreads in forex they can easily eat up 30% of your equity. It's not necessarily a choice to avoid the short term charts, it's a matter of economics and survival.
