In my experience a lot of those sudden movements are, indeed, caused by news, and often previously unscheduled news at that. Sometimes they do seem totally random though.

I have, for the most part, been a manual trader since I began trading several years ago. I feel comfortable that way, but if I find an EA I like I am ready and willing to switch to automated trading.
