as I know algorithms are trading in many timeframes with various frequencies and are periodically (often) optimized even in real time if necessary - means different trading decisions and different trading range some of them are trading for pennies ...

i think that all those spikes with no reason are caused by conflicting algorithms. liqiudity shocks - when few algos are selling few buying in narrow range and then, after while, all are taking one, the same direction
