Employment increased by 60,000 (+0.3%) in September and the employment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 60.6%. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.1%. Employment was up in the core-aged group (25 to 54 years old) both for women (+76,000; +1.2%) and men (+33,000; +0.5%), while it fell among people aged 55 and older (-44,000; -1.0%). There was little change in employment for youth aged 15 to 24. There were more people working in manufacturing (+28,000; +1.5%), health care and social assistance (+14,000; +0.5%) and agriculture (+13,000; +6.1%). Canada’s labour market added a net 60,400 jobs in September and the unemployment rate held steady at 7.1 per cent, according to Statistics Canada data released on Friday. Economists had expected the Canadian economy to drop around 2,500 jobs in September and the unemployment rate to rise to 7.2 per cent, according to consensus estimates published by the Bank of Montreal. The September data follow significant job losses in July and August, which were frequently noted by economists ahead of the Bank of Canada’s decision to cut its overnight rate last month.
