Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could help to deliver better cross-border payments. Nine out of 10 central banks are exploring CBDCs, both conceptually and technically, either in retail or wholesale form or both. Work on wholesale CBDCs is increasingly driven by reasons related to cross-border payments efficiency (Kosse and Mattei (2022)).
