Real gross domestic product (GDP) edged up 0.1% in September, after remaining essentially unchanged in August. Services-producing industries rose 0.2% in September, in large part driven by increases in the retail and wholesale trade sectors. This was the fourth consecutive month where the services-producing industries increased. Goods-producing industries contracted 0.3% in September, as the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction and the manufacturing sectors contracted in the month. Goods-producing industries were down for a second month in a row. Overall, 11 of 20 sectors expanded in September.

Canada's economy misses BoC forecast, expanding 1 per cent annually in the third quarter
Canada's economy grew 1 per cent annually in the third quarter, Statistics Canada said on Friday, as real gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 0.1 per cent in September. The quarterly results were in line with economist expectations. The economic expansion is below the Bank of Canada's forecast of 1.5 per cent annual growth, and a slower pace than the 2.1 per cent rise seen in the second quarter. On a monthly basis, analysts had expected real GDP to grow 0.3 per cent in September. Canada's economy was unchanged in August, with GDP coming in at 0 per cent.
