    Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the second quarter of 2024 (table 1), according to the "advance" estimate released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 1.4 percent. The GDP estimate released today is based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency (refer to “Source Data for the Advance Estimate” on page 3).     The US economy grew at a faster than expected pace in the second quarter. The Bureau of Economic Analysis's advance estimate of first quarter US gross domestic product (GDP) showed the economy grew at an annualized pace of 2.8% during the period, well above the 2% growth expected by economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The reading came in higher than first quarter GDP, which was revised down to 1.4%. Meanwhile, the "core" Personal Consumption Expenditures index, which excludes the volatile food and energy categories, grew by 2.9% in the first quarter, above estimates of 2.7% but significantly lower than 3.7% gain in ... Us economy grew at a 2.8% pace in the second quarter at least more than expected.
How much of this is weapons? There appear to be some divergence between this number and the other numbers coming out.

The acceleration was driven primarily by increases in consumer spending, private inventory investment, and nonresidential fixed investment.

Consumer spending rose, with notable contributions from both services and goods. Services saw significant growth in health care, housing and utilities, and recreation services. In the goods sector, there was a strong demand for motor vehicles and parts, recreational goods, furnishings, and other energy goods.

Private inventory investment contributed positively, reflecting increases in wholesale trade and retail trade industries.

Imports, which are a subtraction in GDP calculation, increased during the quarter, adding to the overall economic activity.

Disposable personal income saw a 3.6% increase, with real disposable personal income growing by 1.0%.


There was a decline in residential fixed investment.

The price index for gross domestic purchases increased by 2.3% in the second quarter, slightly lower than the 3.1% increase in the first quarter. The PCE price index, excluding food and energy prices, rose by 2.9%.

The personal saving rate was 3.5%, down from 3.8% in the first quarter, indicating a slight decrease in the proportion of disposable income being saved.
