In April 2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) accelerated over one month: +0.5%, after +0.2% in March. The rise in prices is explained by the increase of the prices of services (+1.0% after 0.0%), trained by transport (+5.6% after ‑0.9%) and insurance services (+3.6% after ‑2.4%) and a slight increase of those of food (+0.1% after 0.0%). Over one month, the prices of manufactured products and tobacco were stable (after respectively +1.3% and +1.4%). Energy prices fell at a slower pace than in the previous month (‑0.3% after ‑0.7%).

Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices rebounded by 0.5% in April 2024, after ‑0.4% in March.

Year-on-year, consumer prices went up by 2.2% in April 2024, after +2.3% in March. This decrease of inflation resulted from the year-on-year slowdown in the prices of food (+1.2% after +1.7%), and tobacco (+9.0% after +10.7%). The prices of manufactured products fell back (‑0.1% after +0.1%). While services prices rose at the same rate as in March (+3.0%). Conversely, the prices of energy accelerated (+3.8% after +3.4%).

Decline of core inflation Year-on-year

Year-on-year, core inflation decreased again, reaching +1.9% in April 2024, after +2.2% in March.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) slowed down over one month (+0.6% after +0.2% in March); Year-on-year, it increased by 2.4% in April 2024, as in the previous month.

The year-on-year slowdown in food prices went on

Year-on-year, food prices rose by 1.2% in April 2024, after +1.7% in March. They thus slowed down for the thirteenth month in a row.

Excluding fresh products, the year-on-year rise in food prices softened (+1.5% after +2.7%) notably for bread and cereals (+1.3% after +2.5%), meat (+0.5% after +1.5%), milk, cheese and eggs (+1.4% after +2.7%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+2.5% after +3.9%), alcoholic (+2.0% after +3.0%) and non-alcoholic beverages (+2.7% after +4.1%). Conversely, the prices of oils and fats accelerated (+3.2% after +3.0%) driven by olive oil prices.

The decrease of the prices of fresh products softened (‑0.7% after ‑3.9%), driven by a slowdown of the decrease of those of fresh vegetables (‑4.7% after ‑11.8%), by the acceleration of the prices of fresh fruits (+0.6% after +0.4%) and by the bounce of the prices of fresh fish (+0.4% after ‑0.8%).

Year-on-year, manufactured product prices edged down

Year-on-year, the prices of manufactured products decreased by 0.1% in April 2024, after +0.1% in March.

The prices of “other manufactured products” were stable year on year (0.0% after +0.4%), due to the decrease of the prices of furniture and furnishings (‑0.3% after +0.1%) and non-durable household goods (‑0.1% after +1.6%), the slowdown in the prices of newspapers and periodicals (+2.8% after +3.2%), cleaning and maintenance products (+1.5% after +3.4%), the stabilisation in the prices of “other appliances, articles and products for body care” (0.0% after +1.4%) and the acceleration of the decrease of those of small non-durable household items (‑2.1% after ‑0.8%), and major household appliances (‑2.9% after ‑2.5%). Conversely, the prices in new vehicles increased (+0.4% after 0.0%) and the prices of spare parts and accessories for passenger cars (+2.9% after +2.6%) and other recreational and cultural durables (+1.8% after +1.3%) accelerated.

The prices of health products decreased at the same pace than the previous month (‑1.4%). Reversely, those of clothing and footwear increased faster than in March (+0.7% after +0.4%).

Stable year-on-year inflation in service prices

Year-on-year, service prices increased by 3.0% in April 2024, as in March.

The prices of transport slowed significantly (+0.6% after +3.0%), due to the strong slowdown of those of airfares (‑0.1% after +7.1%) and the sharper fall of those of transport by road (‑3.0% after ‑0.4%), while rail transport prices accelerated year-on-year (+6.2% after +4.7%).

The prices of communications services continued to decrease (‑6.6% after ‑6.3%) due to mobile telephony services (‑12.3% after ‑11.5%).

The prices of rents, water and household refuse collection (+2.8% after +2.7%) and “other services” (+4.2% after +3.9%) accelerated, notably those of insurance services (+8.6% after +5.5%) and accommodation services (+2.8% after +1.3%). Finally the prices of health services slowed down slightly year-on-year (+1.4% after +1.5%).

Acceleration in energy prices Year-on-year

Year-on-year, the prices of energy rose by 3.8% in April 2024, after +3.4% in March.

This year-on-year acceleration can be explained by the slowdown of the decrease in the prices of petroleum products (‑0.7% after ‑2.0%), notably those of diesel (‑0.8% after ‑2.3%) and petrol (‑0.9% after ‑2.0%).

The prices of electricity slowed down (+19.2% after +20.4%), while those of gas still decreased (‑13.6% after ‑11.3%).

Lastly, the prices of solid fuel decreased at a soften rate than in March (‑9.3% after ‑11.0%).
